Continuing with this week's theme...
I attempted to ruin another expensive possession at work today. While working, I accidentally knocked a bottle of water over and some spilled into my laptop. At first I thought the water was confined to the keyboard; I mopped up the water I saw then continued to work.

A few minutes later, the computer froze. I pulled up the keyboard and saw that water had seeped underneath the keyboard. I hit the power and set the laptop so that my test computers would blow hot air into the laptop. After a couple hours, I tried it to boot the computer. The laptop booted to the login screen, I logged in, and then the kernel panicked. I tried to reboot; the power button didn't respond.

Uh oh.

I came home and aimed a fan at that laptop guts under the keyboard and waited. A few hours ago I picked it up, inserted the battery, and tried the power button again. Everything seems fine now. Whew.

Fucking hell.

Last weekend, Nicole was using my brand new Mac Mini. Of course, that also means she was using my almost brand new Dell 2005fpw 20" lcd... Not to mention my mostly new wireless keyboard. And, she was drinking coffee while doing this. So, I'm playing fetch with the dog downstairs. The way our apt is laid out, we have a second floor with a sort of balcony over the living room which is where my mac mini lives. I decide to give the dog a good challenge by tossing his toy over the balcony edge to where Nicole is sitting. Nothing but net... The toy went straight into the coffeee, splashing coffee everywhere. Keyboard was the worst hit, but I did actually get a big splash on the Mac Mini. It looks like it's going to survive, but I have a nice brown stain on the felt in the slot loader to remind me of what an idiot I am. I think I got the keyboard back to a good state, though if the N sticks on me again, I'll have to buy a new one. Can't tolerate sticky keys, you know...

I'll see that, and raise you a fishtank.

We used to keep two fish in a 20 gallon tank. When our ap't was having a routine fumigation, we covered the tank with a towel... whose middle sagged into the tank... and the sides of the sodden towel started dripping water. Probably 5-10 gallons worth.

Well, I'm not sure if it was the moisture, or if it was the waste/food particulate matter therein, but it makes for one dead (new) laptop living on a desk two feet below the tank.
